For those who experience this release of aggression after drinking the speed of the onset of their belligerence may depend on their recent mood and stress level. Relapse is a common feature of substance use disorders, and it is more the rule than the exception. In fact, 40 to 60 percent of people recovering from substance addiction relapse at some point according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse — but this doesn’t mean their treatment has failed. By the time people reach the contemplation stage, they’ve begun to recognize they have a drinking problem and may want to get help, but they’re often on the fence about it.

Believe it or not, once I adapted a new attitude and view on life, I actually started enjoying my life again. My days were filled with more peace, serenity and happiness and the alcoholic was still drinking every day. Even though the insanity of alcoholism was still present in my life, I was learning how to love an alcoholic without conditions. This is what happens when we start  breaking the destructive patterns of reacting to an alcoholic and start responding differently. I’m not sure when the miracle happened of my outlook on life being more positive.

While end-stage alcoholism is a dire situation, it’s not a hopeless one. Late-stage alcoholics can get better if they seek treatment, and some of their tommy lee drinking health problems can even be reversed if caught early enough. Some chronic alcoholics develop a condition called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which results from a thiamine (vitamin B-1) deficiency. The condition, which is sometimes called wet brain, is characterized by eye movement disorders, loss of muscle coordination, confusion and memory issues. It affects more men than women and is fatal 10 to 20 percent of the time.

While it may be tempting to rush into recovery at this point, experts actually caution against this sort of sudden action. In their book “Changing for Good,” psychologists James Prochaska, John Norcross and Carlo DiClemente warn that those who “cut short the preparation stage” are more likely to fail. It’s never too late to speak with someone about ways to reduce your alcohol intake. Joel Touchet, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Fountain Hills Recovery, Fountain Hills, Arizona, adds that alcohol removes the filters and defense mechanisms we often use in daily life. It’s a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, which impairs your natural ability to perform cognitive functions like forming memories, making decisions, and regulating emotions or urges.

What do healthcare professionals who work with adolescents need to know about alcohol?

While it doesn’t cause major or noticeable shifts for everyone, some people can seem completely different compared to when they’re sober. Remember that recovery is possible for both you and your partner, but it takes time and effort. Prioritizing your own well-being is not only important for yourself – it also sets an example for your partner about the importance of self-care on the road to recovery.

I think it was just a progressive thing that occurred over time as I continued  to participate in the Al-anon program. With every meeting I attended and with each page of literature I read, I slowly got a little healthier. Before I knew it, the compulsive anger and rage I had prior to joining the support group had dwindled to an occasional frown. First and foremost, it’s important to remember that alcoholism is not your fault or responsibility. Your partner’s addiction is their own, and they are ultimately responsible for their own recovery. However, if you’re living with an alcoholic, your behavior can have an impact on their ability to stay sober.

You’ll also want to avoid any interruptions so that you both have each other’s full attention. Make sure your person is not upset or preoccupied with other issues. While the recovery period may be challenging, it’s also filled with milestones that can transform your life into one that’s better than you could have previously imagined. During this stage, most people focus their energy on coping with cravings and resisting the urge to drink. The abstinence stage typically begins right after you stop drinking. So far, there’s no consensus on the medical definition of recovery in alcohol treatment literature.

Seek support from a therapist or a support group for loved ones of people struggling with addiction. When alcoholism progresses, people tend to become somewhat reckless. One or two irresponsible incidents doesn’t necessarily indicate someone has a severe alcohol problem. But chronic recklessness is a cause for concern — especially if this person is typically mild-mannered and disciplined. Examples of reckless behavior include physical altercations, going to school or work while intoxicated, drinking and driving, and other illegal or dangerous activities.
