The scientific method has been the basis for some of the greatest technological breakthroughs in the history of technology. Businesses that take a scientific approach are competitive. But it’s essential to understand that science isn’t only about innovation, it’s about understanding the world around us and the ways that people use products or services.

Scientists are typically immersed in their work and focusing on expanding knowledge. Entrepreneurs are the ones who can turn this discovery into something that benefits society. This requires a different set capabilities, such as scepticism, and a more material focus. While science is often driven by curiosity, intuition or prior knowledge, it is important to incorporate scepticism and techniques such as internal and external peer review, randomized control trials and the like to avoid blind optimism.

It’s not all about profit. It’s about making choices that benefit employees, customers and shareholders in the long-term. The challenge is to create a framework which supports both aspects, and recognizes their interconnectedness.

A major in Interdisciplinary Science and Business is an excellent opportunity to build an integrated framework that combines these two areas of expertise so that you’re ready for a successful career in any field that is business-related. The program is offered jointly by Penn State Behrend School of Science and the Black School of Business. It is among the few business science programs for undergraduates in the country. The degree allows you to customize your plan by choosing a specialized block of courses that meet your needs in either the science or business side of the equation.
