Eulogy The legacy of Carolina Odman

She went to school at École primaire d’Aubonne, and then the Gymnase de Nyon. Inspired by her high school physics teacher, she decided to pursue a career in the sciences. She then became someone who herself would inspire young people across so many countries to pursue their dreams, and actively help them with it. I started therapy a few months before I got diagnosed actually. I was unwell and I was diagnosed with anxiety.

Living with hand foot syndrome

Now that modern medicine is more aware the intimate relationship Dr. Carolina Odman blog between the gastro-intestinal tract and our brains, I am convinced it was the beginning of the tumour that made me feel off, not anxiety brought on by external factors. There is no scientific way to make sure of that, especially after the fact, but I have grown to trust my instincts, as they have always pointed me in the right direction. The natural world, with its endless play of light and color, continues to reveal its wonders to those who take the time to look closely. The birth of a rainbow in the delicate web of a spider is just one of the many fascinating phenomena that nature has to offer. These observations of light refraction in everyday settings continue to intrigue me.

Hands

I have discovered much smaller, subtle detail in all the ranges that I do tolerate. If anything, it’s a journey of discovery into a new perspective on things. I am mainly putting these examples here for others who may have the same symptoms of narrowing tolerance ranges, because it’s always good to know that one is not alone. Also, having more than one perspective on something is generally quite helpful I’ve found.

Nature is full of small wonders like this, and moments like these remind me of the magic in everyday surroundings. This small, fleeting rainbow may not have been the vibrant spectacle we see after a rainstorm, but it was just as inspiring, a reminder of the beauty found in the most unexpected places. Most academics excel at their area of expertise, but not everyone knows how to publicise themselves. I have put together a small website that hopefully will help academics create a simple webpage to showcase their work in all its diversity – research, teaching, supervising, outreach, and more.

My grip is crazy light so I keep dropping things. Other things, I have no more fingerprints at all (they would come back if I stopped the treatment) and weird deep new lines in my fingers that feel like I’m bending cardboard under my skin. And I have a really good quality of life. To get to good temperatures when it’s scorching hot, I go to air conditioned places like the gym or the mall; there is always a new book that I’d love to dig into.

In the evening, my 10 minute soak in cold water has epsom salt and antiseptic. I use Dr. Sole epsom salt foot soak which has menthol and a lovely cooling after effect. I put a layer of Treet It tea tree antiseptic cream on my toe nails and toes, and a thick layers of ISDIN Podos Gel Oil on the soles of my feet. Research literature shows that people with a better mental health have better outcomes (i.e. how long and well one lives after a cancer diagnosis). So I have been going to therapy, and generally it has helped me get rid of things I had carried for a long time, and not let them interfere with my wellbeing.

Light behaves differently based on its color, which is also why the sky is blue and sunsets are red. The atmosphere scatters blue light in all directions, while red light passes more directly, making it more prominent during sunrise and sunset. A rainbow is one of nature’s most beautiful phenomena, often symbolizing unity and diversity with its stunning range of colors. It has captivated human imagination for centuries, partly because its end remains unreachable. I recently witnessed the birth of a rainbow in a spider’s web spun across some succulents on the ground, and it left me in awe. What stays with us is her constant ability in finding beauty in things we have learnt to take for granted.

Without the ground to block our view, we could see a full circle, as some people have observed from airplanes. Carolina was a founding member of the African Network for Women in Astronomy (AfNWA) and a serving member of the AfNWA board. She has been a powerful force in our community, advocating for the representation of women in science and industry, and working towards empowering minorities in our society. Her contributions in this regards have been recognised through many awards.

It has helped with acceptance of many things; being sick (I was really fit before), self-image (no hair I can deal with although I don’t want to have to, but no eyebrows is just awful, and those guys seem like they never grow back!). Finally, it has really helped me cope when I got the second, third, fourth diagnosis, got hospitalised for one reason or other, and with the long and painful months of chemotherapy. Carolina Odman was one of those rare individuals who genuinely brought happiness into the lives of the people she met.

We, at AfNWA, are grateful for her immense contribution and continue to be guided by her life’s work in making our world a better place through astronomy and science. Carolina was incredibly brave and honest about herself. Here she worked on Theoretical cosmology, bayesian statistics, and programming. Carolina was born on 3 July 1974 to Maud Mariana Ödman and Sten Erik Ödman in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has a sibling, Micaela Louise Ödman.
